A senior Indian government official recently emphasized that increased financial support for technological textile research is set to drive the growth of this promising industry. Rita Menon, the country's Textile Minister, highlighted the potential for rapid expansion in the sector during a speech at the 2011 India Tech Textile Summit.
She stated, “The technical textile industry is projected to grow by 11% annually before 2012-13. However, without policy intervention, the growth rate is expected to slow down to 6-8% by 2020.†But with strategic government measures, such as regulatory adjustments and targeted promotions, the sector could see a more robust annual growth of 12-15% by 2020.
To ensure alignment with global standards, India plans to engage consultants to evaluate and reform existing regulations. This move aims to create a more favorable environment for innovation and international competitiveness.
On February 25, 2011, the first project approval committee will meet with the cabinet secretary to review key initiatives. As the largest buyer of technical textiles in the country, the government has established various quality standards, which are expected to significantly boost the industry’s development.
India’s technical textile sector holds great promise for attracting investment and generating employment. By 2012, investments are anticipated to reach 50 billion rupees, while job creation is expected to rise to 1.2 million. Despite this growth potential, the country still imports around $1.4 billion worth of technical textile products annually—mostly high-tech and specialized items.
This highlights the vast market opportunities available and the need for domestic production to meet growing demand. Menon also stressed the government’s commitment to supporting the sector through the establishment of large-scale industrial clusters. Funding will be provided for research, development, and technology upgrades to enhance the industry’s capabilities.
Technical textiles have a wide range of applications, from infrastructure and defense to firefighting equipment and even disposable diapers. With continued government support and strategic planning, the future of India’s technical textile industry looks very promising.
