Affected by the strong Australian dollar exchange rate and the soaring global cotton prices, Australian cotton exports in January this year plummeted to 5,306 tons, a decrease of 69.3% year-on-year. During the month, shipments of Australian cotton to all major export regions generally fell sharply. Shipments to China and Thailand decreased by 99.2% and 87.8%, respectively, year-on-year.

Due to the significant reduction in exports in January, the year-on-year increase in Australia’s cumulative cotton exports gradually decreased during the year. As of January, this year's Australian cotton exports totaled 174,000 tons, a year-on-year increase of only 1.3%, compared to a year-on-year increase of 200.6% in August last year. If there is no change in the next few months, there will be negative growth in exports throughout the year. To achieve the forecast of 588,000 tons by the US Department of Agriculture, the average monthly export volume for the rest of the year will need to reach 69,000 tons. Although the new Australian cotton flower is soon to be harvested, the export volume has gradually increased. However, since the harvest and shipment of new cotton have to wait until May, the outlook for the export of this year is still not optimistic.
