Daphne International Holdings Limited recently announced its 2009 annual financial results on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. The company reported total revenue of HK$58.32 billion for the year, reflecting a 10% increase compared to the previous year. However, net profit declined by 20% to HK$394 million, and basic earnings per share dropped by 20% to 24.05 Hong Kong cents. This decline in net profit was primarily attributed to a fair value loss of HK$203.5 million related to warrants. The report also highlighted that Daphne’s cost of sales for 2009 reached HK$2.625 billion, resulting in an annual gross margin of 55%, up from 52.7% in 2008—an improvement of 2.3 percentage points. Despite the challenges faced in the market, Daphne remained the primary source of profit for the group. During the year, the company expanded its retail presence by adding 514 new sales outlets nationwide. By the end of 2009, Daphne operated a total of 1,904 stores, 716 counters, and 743 franchised retail locations. Notably, Daphne decided to exit the sports apparel sector by the end of 2009, closing all Nike-branded points of sale. The number of adidas outlets was reduced to 41. Additionally, the performance of its mid-to-high-end brands, such as "Arezzo" in mainland China and international brands like "Sofft" and its subsidiary "Born," did not meet expectations due to market uncertainty. As a result, Daphne is currently reviewing and restructuring its strategy for mid-to-high-end footwear. At the end of 2009, the company operated only 4 "Arezzo" and 4 "Sofft" outlets. Looking ahead, Daphne plans to open 500 new "Daphne" points of sale in 2010, including 250 outlets/counts and 250 franchise locations, along with 250 "Shoes Cabinet" outlets. In January 2010, Daphne acquired a 60% equity stake in Full Pearl International Limited, a leading luxury footwear retailer operating in first- and second-tier cities in China, as well as in Hong Kong and Taiwan. Full Pearl currently operates around 200 outlets selling its own brands, "Love" and "Charm," as well as other licensed brands like ALDO and Jessica Simpson. This acquisition is expected to help Daphne expand into the high-end domestic market. Furthermore, Daphne appointed Ms. Ma Xuezheng, the managing director of TPG, as a non-executive director. This move aims to strengthen the company's supply chain system and improve operational efficiency, leveraging TPG’s expertise for short- to medium-term gains.
