A few days ago, the American Apparel and Footwear Association (AAFA), led by Kevin M. Burke, sent a formal letter to the government of Bangladesh, urging immediate release of garment workers who were detained in late July 2010 over unpaid wages at factories. This move has sparked renewed international attention on labor conditions in one of the world's largest textile producers. The AAFA represents some of the most influential U.S. apparel importers, including major retailers like Walmart, JCPenney, H&M, Cintas, Kmart, and VFC. These companies have significant sway over U.S. policy and are now pressuring their own government to take action. In a separate statement, 17 U.S. congressional representatives also issued a letter calling on all U.S. clothing importers to use their influence to support the workers in Bangladesh and discourage the Bangladeshi government from shutting down certain non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that advocate for better labor rights. The letter warned that if conditions don't improve, U.S. importers may reconsider sourcing from Bangladesh, which could have serious economic consequences for the country. The AAFA also specifically called out two major Bangladeshi garment manufacturers, ENVOYGROUP and NASSAGROUP, highlighting concerns about labor practices in their facilities. In response, Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister Dipu Moni is currently engaging with local stakeholders to address the issue. Meanwhile, Labor Minister Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain emphasized that the U.S. has been misled by inaccurate information. He reiterated that the Bangladeshi government is committed to protecting citizens' rights and enforcing laws, while also stating that any NGOs involved in activities that disrupt social order will be dealt with according to the law. This situation highlights the growing global pressure on Bangladesh to improve working conditions in its garment industry, as well as the complex relationship between international trade, labor rights, and political influence.
