As a teacher, I truly enjoy learning from my students. During my fit workshops, it's always insightful to observe the sewing challenges they encounter and listen to their sewing aspirations. Working with each individual allows us both to grow and gain new insights.
About a year and a half ago, during one of my workshops, I noticed that our Liesl + Co. pattern collection lacked many princess seam designs. Princess seams are particularly advantageous for beginners learning to fit garments, especially for those who are fuller-busted, as the seam runs directly over the bust, allowing for personalized adjustments to better suit one's body shape.
During that particular workshop, I was also wearing a beloved Shirt I've had for quite some time. It features deep tuxedo-style pleats, and one participant remarked she wished there was a sewing pattern for this shirt. Well, here it is!
However, the pattern has been refined since that workshop. Coincidentally, the timing of that request aligned perfectly with my own efforts to develop a princess-seam pattern. After returning home, I began drafting the basic princess-seam design while simultaneously pondering the specific request for a tuxedo-pleated shirt. Once the basic princess-seam pattern was complete, it dawned on me that these two ideas complemented each other beautifully. By hiding the princess seams behind the tuxedo pleats, the resulting design is a stunningly elegant shirt without any visible darts or seams! Unlike my original tuxedo shirt, which had a shoulder dart, the new design eliminates this detail by integrating the pleats seamlessly.
This brings us to the Recital Shirt pattern, offering two distinct views. View A is a classic princess-seam shirt with a ruffled collar (which can be swapped for a standard band collar) and a continuous (cut-on) placket. View B introduces the tuxedo-pleated front panel, completely concealing the princess seams, along with a charming tuxedo collar and a separate (set-in) front placket.
Both versions boast those delightful details that make a shirt truly special: tower sleeve plackets and proper sleeve cuffs with a separate facing piece. The Recital Shirt features an ever-so-slightly more tailored back with darts for shaping. Similar to our Liesl + Co. Classic Shirt (which also includes these special touches), this pattern offers pieces for A/B, C, and D cup sizes, meaning I’ve done much of the fitting work for you.
The Recital Shirt pattern pieces harmonize with our Classic Shirt pattern pieces—meaning all components work together seamlessly. If you prefer the collar from one pattern, it will pair beautifully with the other. The slightly more fitted Recital Shirt back with darts can easily be incorporated into the Classic Shirt pattern as well (the sleeves, yokes, and cuffs are identical across both patterns). I like providing options.
There are countless ways to customize this shirt, especially when paired with the Classic Shirt pattern and a few of our tutorials! Imagine princess seams paired with a pussy bow or inserting a ruffle into the seams for a modern touch. I'll be sharing more ideas and possibly some tutorials soon.
This pattern pairs wonderfully with almost any shirting fabric—tartan would look fantastic! Lawn, gingham, oxford, and others are equally suitable. For more fabric suggestions, check out this post. Double gauze isn't ideal for View B due to its bulkiness, but lighter to medium-weight woven fabrics like voile, lawn, shirtings, poplin, broadcloth, chambray, and linen work beautifully. Quilting cottons are also a great option, and View A can even accommodate flannel. For the turquoise View A shirt shown here, I used a stunning handwoven cotton gifted by our friend Giulia from India. The light-blue View B shirt features Limerick Linen from Robert Kaufman in Marine color, which pleats beautifully.
You can grab your own Recital Shirt sewing pattern later this week in both paper and digital formats. Check the countdown clocks on each page to see how much longer until it’s available. If it’s not out yet, leave your email to get notified when it’s released. If you haven’t already, consider picking up the Classic Shirt pattern as well, available in both formats.
I can’t wait to see what you create with this pattern! Be sure to tag it #lieslandco and #recitalshirt on Instagram, and we’d love to see it added to the Liesl + Co. Flickr group too. Don’t forget our Liesl + Co. Friends Facebook group where you can share your projects, ask questions, and stay updated on what others are making.
